What do your eyes really say about you?

If you are getting ready to kiss someone on that countdown to the New Year, be sure to pay attention to the closeness of their eyes – it could be your key to finding love in 2010.

A new report has revealed that, aside from words, people are more likely to use a person’s eyes to read their inner-most thoughts and feelings, proving that they really are the “window to the soul”.

Eyes can be the biggest tell-tale sign in a person – and you do not have to look, like boggle-eyed comedian and actor Marty Feldman, for people to notice you.

The study, courtesy of laser eye specialists Ultralase, questioned 1,000 men and women across the UK to determine how they best determine the qualities possessed by a potential partner.

Using a person’s eyes to read their feelings was ranked number one by the majority of those surveyed.

Twenty-two per cent said they used posture as a marker of personality, while 16 per cent said they kept a close eye on a person’s hand movements.

Results revealed that eyes close together indicated trust and discretion with a sharp focus on detail, while eyes that are deep set indicate lots of emotional baggage and a deep personality.

Eyes with large irises are usually found on people who are very emotional and require constant reassurance, while asymmetric wide-set eyes indicate commitment, loyalty and tolerance.

Carmel McHugh, a 22-year-old graphic designer from Lincoln, explained that eyes were the things that attracted her to her current long-term partner.

“I’ve been with my boyfriend for nearly six years,” she explained.

“But even after all that time, I still remember when we first met and when I looked into his eyes. Eyes are one of the most noticeable things about a person.

“They are a dark, rich brown colour, an average distance apart, and quite deep set. I knew then he was going to be compassionate, romantic and loyal. Now, more than five years later, I haven’t looked back so I guess I must have been right about something.”

Nicholas Firth, a 24-year-old shop clerk from North Hykeham, explained that he believed eyes were a person’s most important feature.

“Eyes are always the first thing I notice about someone,” he said.

“I truly believe you can tell a lot about what a person is going to be like just be their eyes.

“You can tell when someone’s being sincere or dishonest, just by the behaviour of his or her eyes. It’s natural body language that you can’t control.”
