It’s a tough time for journalists, right? We’re all scrambling for whatever freelance work we can get, and many of us are even considering a career change. Well, with this in mind, cast your eye at the potential job vacancy I came across thanks to Barker Ross employment agency.
Job Title: Santa Claus
Location: Lincoln
Hours: 30 hours per week
Wage: £10 – 12 per hour
We’ll bypass the crushing affect this has had on my childhood illusion that Santa only has to work the one day of the year, and focus on the salary. At over a tenner an hour, it pays better than my last freelance position, with the job description not sounding that much different:
“Must be a friendly communicator, reliable and able to work in a very busy grotto. Previous acting experience desirable, but not essential.”
Replace “busy grotto” with “lively newsroom” and it sounds like every journalism job vacancy I’ve ever read.
Let’s not forget that potential job satisfaction: bringing joy, wonder and the magic of childhood to kids. I’d trade that for the typical county council complaints any day.
I never thought I’d say this, but maybe I’m in the wrong industry. Just let me dig out my CRB check and adjust my CV, and I’ve got work for the winter…
In all seriousness, as my re-location to London in search of fame and fortune, I've been widening my job search by looking for positions involving essential journalistic skills (good writing style, ability to prioritise, impeccable organisation, working to tight deadlines under pressure, etc). Let's have a job application update.
Jobs applied for: 8
Positive responses: 3
Rejections: 0
Hopefully some more positive responses are pending following some up-and-coming application deadlines.
