Movie to videogame translations usually tend to be nothing more than a way to make money from the latest hype. The virtual take on this summer’s biggest blockbuster is no different.
Roughly based on the Michael Bay sequel, the game is a third person shooter asking you to take the side of either the Autobots or the Decepticons to help them find ‘The Fallen’ and deal with it in accordance to their alignment.
Unfortunately, unnecessarily complicated controls, frustrating on-screen displays and pitiful in-game intelligence make this off-shoot of an 80s classic far too much of a chore to enjoy.
Missions, whichever side you take, are far too repetitive. You’re asked to enter an area, kill everything, and occasionally liaise with an ally. This simplicity might be attractive to some gamers, but engaging in combat is far too fiddly. And you’d think that a Transformers game would have some pretty exciting cut-scenes and in-game movies, right? Wrong.
The novelty of transforming from robot to vehicle should wear off after about 20 minutes. After that, the only thing left to keep you playing is an average-at-best multiplayer option. Disappointing.
