Those of us looking to go away this summer are finding more cost-effective ways to take time off in an attempt to fight back against the recession.
Lincolnshire travel agents are reporting a massive increase in the number of caravanning and camping holidays being booked.
Kerry Emson-Smith (30), the branch manager of Co-operative Travel in Louth, explained how camping ‘stay-cations’ had increased in popularity over the last 12 months.
“I’ve been in the travel business for 12 years, and I’ve booked more camping holidays this year than ever before” she said.
“They’re great value for money. You simply pack your own food and entertainment, jump in the car, and drive to your destination.
“You could even get a cheap ferry from Dover to Calais, and have a family holiday in the south of France for around £300.”
Mrs Emson-Smith attributed the growing interest in value-for-money holidays to the current economic climate, explaining how a lot of clients have had to cancel expensive trips overseas in search of a cheaper alternative.
“A lot of my clients are struggling to find work and just don’t have the money to spend on a two grand holiday,” she said.
Lincolnshire people are seemingly finding some extra cash for holidays from somewhere, as Mrs Emson-Smith explained that the figures for this year’s turnover so far had increased by 24 per cent compared to last year.
And the reported increase in camping holidays has lead to economic benefits for camping equipment suppliers.
One store in particular that has seen a definite upsurge is Yeoman’s Outdoor Leisure, which is preparing to move from its home on Lincoln’s High Street to bigger premises on St Mark Street.
Yeoman’s has been situated on the High Street for over 20 years, but an increase in demand has lead to the need for a bigger, more modern store.
Mike Lacey, a buyer and marketing officer from Yeoman’s, explained how the recession had led to changes within the business.
“The Lincoln store is one of a few we are modernising, we want to focus more on the camping side of things as everyone seems to be staying at home more for holidays because of the recession” he said.
“This has been a good summer for us; it has been sunny and raining, which means we have had rushes on camping things and waterproofs.”
‘Stay-cations’ are far less costly than holidays overseas. There are no hotel charges, and travel expenses can be made as minimal as necessary.
